The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has suspended its global voyage, leaving around 200 passengers stranded in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Source: bbc.co.uk.
What Happened
Passengers were ordered to disembark. They are now in temporary living arrangements in the port city.
The operator says it is working with passengers to manage the transition. No timeline for resuming the voyage has been set.
Key Facts
- Monthly fuel costs in some Asian ports now reach $8,000 — up from $1,800.
- The company reduced fuel use by slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port.
- Passengers were asked to pay a fuel surcharge. The company said full cost passes were not realistic.
- The company will spend 60 days restructuring and recapitalising. No outcome is guaranteed.
Background: How the Voyage Worked
The Villa Vie Odyssey was designed as a long-term floating home. Permanent cabins cost $120,000 to $440,000.
In 2024, after Donald Trump won his second term, the company launched a four-year ‘Skip Forward’ package. A CEO said it was for people who planned to leave the country after political events.
The ship has bars, restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court. These amenities support a lifestyle of continuous sea living.
Passenger Experience
Holly Hennessey, a passenger, said she didn’t expect to spend time in Cambodia. She and others now stay in local hotels. Several shipmates share rooms.

‘Until they say we are done – done done – I am not giving up,’ she said. ‘I could never duplicate this lifestyle. The idea of going home? It would be so trite.’
She added that Cambodia isn’t her ideal place, but it’s not the worst option right now.
Why It Matters
The suspension shows how fuel price spikes can disrupt long-term travel plans. Prices rose sharply after the Iran conflict began earlier this year.
For a ship built on continuous global travel, fuel costs have become a major financial risk. The incident raises questions about long-term travel in volatile markets.
Some passengers left the ship to travel on land. Others, like Hennessey, stayed in Cambodia, seeing it as a pause, not an end.
